The Linda Fund: BWE Grants for Crafters

In 2014, the Brooklyn Women’s Exchange lost one of our most beloved volunteers, Linda Alperin, to breast cancer at age 66. During more than 25 years of service, Linda made significant contributions to the organization through her leadership as Consignor Chair and President. As a skilled knitter, she deeply appreciated both the artistry and value of handcrafted goods and the people that made them. Linda also passed on her love of handcrafting to her daughter, jewelry designer Marissa Alperin, whose creations have been a cherished part of BWE for the past decade.
To continue the legacy of Linda’s joyful and generous spirit, and her dedication to the people whose crafts we sell, the BWE established a fund in her honor. Since its inception, The Linda Fund has awarded more than 10 grants, totaling more than $8,200, to individual craftspeople as well as our umbrella organization, The Federation of Women’s Exchanges.

Crafters in our community are invited to submit an application for funds. Past recipients have used their grants to purchase essential materials, attend advanced workshops, repair equipment, and upgrade studio lighting to accommodate visual impairments. These investments help our artisans refine their skills, expand their product lines, and build sustainable creative businesses.

“The Brooklyn Women’s Exchange grant helped me purchase a new, larger bandsaw. That in turn helped me spend less time doing maintenance and more time making my products.”
